First off, thank you all for all the warm wishes and congratulations! We are thrilled to have them here with us. It's surreal to be the parents of 5, not to mention twins. They are all a joy! Jared, Payton and Liza couldn't be sweeter to Sienna and Briley.
As of tonight at around 5, the pediatrician has placed them on a strict diet of nothing. They are getting nutrition through an IV. The reason for this is because they aren't digesting the food that is in their tummies. We know this because the measure how much goes in and and in 3 hours when they are due for another feeding they pull out the food through the NG tube (in their noses) and measure it. Sometimes it is less, sometimes it's more with the gastric juices and all. Although, they are breathing on their own and pooping and peeing lots they just aren't digesting quick enough. We'll see how they do through the night. Tomorrow is a new day. They have proven that they can breastfeed also so that isn't an issue.
I've been discharged and they are still in NICU. I will be there during the days and home at night. I'm feeling incredible. Just a little bummed that I'm home and they are not. The hospital, though, is very accommodating. I can stay there 24 hours a day if I liked, they also have a Ronald McDonald room just outside the NICU with TV, Internet, food and drinks.
Now on to the real story, their arrival. I woke up Sunday morning around 4 with contractions and decided that I should start timing them since I was actually having to breath through them and they seemed to be coming with consistency. I woke Barry up around 4:25 and told him that I'd had about 4 contractions within the past 20 minutes. They were roughly 8 minutes apart. I decided to continue to try to sleep and see where they went. Right before I was due for another contraction Sienna (baby A) moved her head and pop, my water broke. We both jumped out of bed, I stood in the shower for a minute and Barry called our friend Carri to come be with the kids. We got loaded in the car and drove like mad to get to the hospital. I have a history of fast labor once my water is broken and we were sweating a bit. The roads were snowy but clear and Barry ran every red light to the hospital. We got there is record time. We arrived at the hospital at 5:05. I swiftly walked to the Birth Center and told them that my water had broken about 20 minutes prior. I told them that I go fast and they didn't seem to understand that. They put me in triage and I was 5 cm. Within 10 minutes they got me to a room and I was "complete", meaning I was ready to push. They rushed me to the OR to get me ready. The doctor kept telling me that there was a possibility of having to do a c-section on "B" once "A" was out. I was getting a little worried since I wasn't able to get an epidural. One contraction later I was pushing. HOLY COW!!! That hurt so bad! Sienna came out with about 3 pushes and then the doc started working on getting "B" turned. She wasn't turning and I was worried that he'd slice me open any minute. Then he decided to dive in and grab her by her feet and pull her out. I honestly can't tell you what hurt more, Sienna coming out our his arm up in me. He was finally able to grab both feet and I pushed and she slid out. It seemed to take forever for it all to end and have relief, but it was only 29 minutes from the time I arrived at the hospital till they were both born. CRAZY!!!! I'm so happy it's over and to have them here. I would not recommend natural child birth for one baby let alone two.
I feel so blessed and am overjoyed that me family is complete. Please continue to keep the babies in your prayers for they still do have some hills to climb.
